The product

Broke is a consumer finance app with attitude. A 2-minute quiz scans 32 federal and state programs across 10 categories, from tax credits, SNAP and Pell Grants to student-loan forgiveness and unclaimed property, and returns a Broke Score with eligible programs and estimated amounts. Subscribers get the AI Slayer Agent to actually do the claiming work.

The hard parts

01

An agent that does tasks, not just chat

The Slayer Agent has to produce very different outputs (letters, call scripts, form answers, appeals) for many programs, each with its own rules.

How we tackled itTask-specific agent flows, each pairing the user’s profile with program context and a structured output format, so a demand letter, a script and a form answer are generated by purpose-built steps rather than one open-ended prompt.
02

State-specific, not generic

Real portals, income limits, agency names and deadlines differ by state, and the agent must use them correctly.

How we tackled itProgram and state knowledge kept as structured reference data that the quiz scoring and the agent both read from, so estimates and generated documents point at the same portals and limits.
03

A score from 9 questions

Turning a short quiz into a Broke Score and per-program estimates across 32 programs.

How we tackled itA scoring engine that maps each answer to program eligibility rules and sums estimated amounts, shown as a preview before the paywall.
04

Free value before the paywall

The quiz, score and program preview are free; the agent and The Blacklist are paid. The split has to feel fair and still convert.

How we tackled itThe free path ends on a personalised result (score plus eligible programs), with the paid features framed as the step that turns that result into action.

Technical approach is described at a product level. Client data and internal metrics stay private.

Outcome

Broke is live on the App Store with a freemium subscription model. Dollar figures in the store listing are the product’s own claims; we don’t restate them as results.
